Cryptids are liminal creatures, or something between species, that have been claimed to exist but remain unsubstantiated. Examples include the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, the Jersey Devil (described as a flying biped with hooves), and the Michigan Dogman (a werewolf-type creature). Cryptids are significant, as they disrupt rigid modes of scientific classification that separate non-human animals from humans. Oftentimes, these creatures are invested with supernatural powers. Here, categories blur to communicate the malleability of identity.
