An exploration of what it means to live with and love dogs through photographic journalism, art, and multispecies anthropology

what does it mean to be 'COMPANION SPECIES'?
'Companion species' is a term coined by Donna Haraway which describes the mutual, two-way relationship between human and nonhuman species (including animals like dogs but also extending to bacteria and insects). Haraway argues that companion species are co-constituted within their shared world; we make each other what we are and hence do not pre-exist our relating. Understanding dogs as companion species means understanding that our very being is fundamentally linked to that of dogs - both socially, historically and biologically. What I like about Haraway’s explication of this idea is her emphasis on the fact that dogs are not babies or toys or projections of oneself but dogs, joined with us in 'significant otherness'.

about me

My name is Natasha, I am 24-year-old social anthropology graduate, raised in Kenya and currently living in Oxford. Some of my small passions include, in no particular order: watching old Disney movies, drawing and painting, long knitting projects, my three Jack Russell terriers (Merry, Nala, and Rocky), YA fantasy novels, fairy lights, Christmas, collecting shells on beaches, and, more recently, consuming endless Choco-Leibniz biscuits with Chai tea.
My greatest passion, however, is animals, and the study of human-animal relations. It is in the everyday relationship between the average human and their canine companion that I have found something remarkable: a new, lively multispecies language and love that transcends all strict boundaries we have created (human vs animal, nature vs culture …) to reveal fundamental connectedness. I believe that this interspecies zone can teach us a great deal about living well in the world, and is hence the subject of this blog.
